Academia in cardiovascular radiology: are we doing enough for the future of the subspecialty?
2021
Aim To explore barriers to academic activities that cardiovascular radiology-oriented radiology trainees face worldwide. Materials and methods An international call for participation in an online survey was distributed via social media and radiological societies to radiology trainees. Questions covered barriers and involvement in academic activities during radiology training. Participants interested in cardiovascular radiology were selected for analysis with appropriate statistical methods. Results Of the 892 respondents, 120 (13.5%) reported an interest in cardiovascular imaging. The majority (63.3%, 76/120) were from Europe and 57.5% (69/120) were men. There were gender discrepancies in a…
No detection of occult HBV-DNA in patients with various rheumatic diseases treated with anti-TNF agents: a two-year prospective study.
2013
OBJECTIVES: The widespread use of tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-targeted therapies in patients with rheumatic, digestive and dermatologic diseases has been associated with reports of reactivation of HBV replication and ensuing hepatitis flares both in asymptomatic HBsAg carriers and in subjects with occult HBV infection. The aim of our work was to investigate in a two-year prospective study the potential for HBV reactivation in patients with inflammatory joint diseases undergoing anti-TNF treatment from a southern Mediterranean area. METHODS: Fifty-seven consecutive outpatients attending the Academic Unit of Rheumatology at the University of Palermo (12 with rheumatoid arthritis, 17 with pso…
Prospective randomized comparison of conventional instruments and the Harmonic Focus(®) device in breast-conserving therapy for primary breast cancer.
2011
Abstract Background In recent years, surgeons have utilized Harmonic instruments to perform breast cancer resection. Retrospective and prospective studies have demonstrated that the use of this surgical device for mastectomy and axillary dissection can reduce perioperative blood loss, seroma formation, and duration and total amount of drainage. No study has analyzed the feasibility of Harmonic instruments in breast-conserving surgery. We conducted a prospective, randomized clinical trial comparing Harmonic instrument and conventional surgery in the performance of breast-conserving surgery and axillary procedures to determine differences in surgical procedures, postoperative outcome, and com…
FOCAL ACTIVE COLITIS AS A PREDICTOR OF INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE: RESULTS FROM A SINGLE-CENTER EXPERIENCE.
2017
The term focal active colitis (FAC) is conventionally used to describe the presence of isolated cryptitis, characterized by an inflammatory infiltrate consisting of intraepithelial neutrophils and/or neutrophils invading the lumen of the criptae, with no other microscopic alteration of the colonic mucosa and, in particular, without the presence of signs of chronic inflammation. To date, only four studies, including one conducted in a pediatric population, have been performed to evaluate the clinical significance of this disease. The aim of this retrospective study on prospectively-collected data is to evaluate the clinical implications of the focal active colitis, since there still remains …
Perception of clinical educational environment by student of physiotherapy based on the Postgraduate Hospital Educational Environment Measurement Que…
2019
Purpose: It aimed at describing the perception of the clinical educational environment by physiotherapy students based on the Postgraduate Hospital Educational Environment Measurement Questionnaire in Chile. Methods: The clinical education environment was evaluated according to the Postgraduate Hospital Educational Environment Measure (PHEEM) by 192 students originally enrolled in the fifth year of the physiotherapy career at 3 different headquarters of the academic institution: Santiago, Viña del Mar, and Concepcion Campus (Metropolitan, Valparaiso, and Bio Bio region, respectively), from March to October 2018. The Cronbach’s α was applied to measure the reliability of the instrument and th…
Prognostic factors in a large multi-institutional series of papillary renal cell carcinoma.
2011
OBJECTIVES To investigate cancer-related outcomes and prognostic factors of papillary renal cell carcinoma (pRCC) in a large multicentre data set. Oncological outcome and prognostic factors of pRCC have been limitedly evaluated in comparison with the most common RCC subtype, clear cell RCC. PATIENTS AND METHODS From a multicentre retrospective database, including 5463 patients who were surgically treated for RCC at 16 Italian academic centres between 1995 and 2007, 577 patients with pRCC were identified. Univariable and multivariable Cox regression models were performed to identify prognostic factors predictive of recurrence-free survival (RFS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) after surge…
Alternatives to Endotracheal Intubation for Patients with Neuromuscular Diseases
2005
To evaluate the usefulness of continuous noninvasive mechanical ventilation and mechanical coughing aids to avoid endotracheal intubation and tracheostomy during episodes of acute respiratory failure in patients with neuromuscular disease. We conducted a prospective cohort study at the respiratory medicine ward of a university hospital to study the success rate of the use of continuous noninvasive mechanical ventilation and manually and mechanically (CoughAssist) assisted coughing to avert endotracheal intubation in 24 consecutive episodes of acute respiratory failure for 17 patients with neuromuscular disease. The noninvasive mechanical ventilation and coughing aids were used to reverse dec…

Detection of oncogenic human papillomavirus genotypes on spermatozoa from male partners of infertile couples
2013
Objective To evaluate the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) sperm infection and its correlation with sperm parameters in patients who attended a fertility clinic. Design Cross-sectional clinical study. Setting University-affiliated reproductive medicine clinic. Patient(s) A total of 308 male partners of couples undergoing in vitro fertilization techniques. Intervention(s) Specimens of semen were collected from all patients. Main Outcome Measure(s) Sperm parameters were evaluated according to the World Health Organization manual. The presence of HPV DNA was researched by the combined use of two HPV assays and a highly sensitive nested polymerase chain reaction assay followed by HPV ge…
Surgical research and clinical routine in the new century.
2002
The German Research Foundation (DFG) has recentlydenounced the poor state of clinical research in Germany[2]. It is therefore worthwhile to contemplate the currentstate of surgical research with special focus on the futurepossibilities to combine research and clinical routine inuniversity hospitals.Current StateReading the daily newspaper one may get the impres-sion that German universities and clinical research in par-ticular are in a deep crisis, and that German professors areto be blamed for it. In medicine, additional insufficienciesof the system are obvious, with corruption cases broughtup against clinicians and conflicts of interest due to thefact that clinical professors in addition …
